40 Years

Dear Friends and Family,

This month marks the exact 40th anniversary of my first day working in Real Estate back in 1983. For the past four decades this industry has become more than a career for me—I love connecting with people and helping them find their place in the world.

My family and friends have become clients and peers, and vice versa. Over the past 40 years, the most memorable moments are all about the people, not the properties...

I'm currently in Aspen following Jazz Aspen Snowmass, and last week was thrilled to host friends and peers from around the country at the Caribou Club, with fellow Compass Agent and REALM member, Doug Leibinger. While Aspen itself has become a home away from home, this melting pot of people reminded me of the importance of connection, regardless of the distance.

A little closer to home, last month, Jason Haber and I hosted friends and clients on Flying Sands Beach for a Clam Bake. I grew up on Long Island before moving to the City in 1984, and the Hamptons has continually been an integral part of my life and my career. After the past few years, the long-time seasonal enclaves are becoming full-time primary residences for anyone looking for more space and sand in their life year-round.

Many of the people at these two events started off as referrals from mutual acquaintances, who over the years have grown into some of my closest friends. I was humbled when I first did the math and realized that 98% of my business came from past clients and referrals. Introducing me to someone you care about is an immense sign of trust.

Speaking of trust, I absolutely wouldn't be where I am today without the incredible support of my team. Behind every deal has been at least one or two (sometimes 10) people helping check every box. Having never worked a traditional corporate job, my team has been my "work family" and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Similarly, after seven years at Compass (as of August 24th), I can't imagine being anywhere else. Our commitment to technology to bolster (instead of replace) each agent, is the future of real estate. For example, last month, Compass held a hackathon to find new ways to integrate AI into our platform and drive our business forward, aided not replaced by tech.

Many worry that technology will supplant humanity, but after 40 years in real estate, I am confident that this is a business of people. While I likely won't be in real estate for another 40 years, I certainly am not retiring anytime soon. If you're reading this, you are my people, and I am honored to be part of finding your place in the world.

Always,
